Native Silver with Goethite & Barite Fryer Hill, Leadville, Leadville District, Lake Co., Colorado 6.83cm x 5.64cm x 4.5cm Ex. A. E. Seaman Mineral Museum No. DM-1756

Description/Interesting Notes: A very unique, rare old time example of native silver from Leadville!!! This specimen consists of a matrix of goethite that hosts a rich distribution of native silver thoughout and hosts numerous barite crystals and some very unique silver crystals as well!!! While the goethite matrix has numerous vugs and cavities throughout, the goethite itself is quite solid and is actually gemmy in small areas!!! The reason you can see that the goethite is actually gemmy is because there are sheets of mirror brilliant native silver that are folded throughout the fine, massive goethite!!! The goethite matrix hosts a broad face covered with stained groups of barite crystals and a number of the vugs contain barite crystals as well!!! There are bits of native silver visible all over the goethite matrix and, upon close inspection one can see that there are areas of native silver under the staining present among the barite crystals!!! Although there are small bits of native silver throughout the specimen, there is a particularly showy area where a broad portion of sheet-like native silver is "folded" in the goethite!!! In addition to the native silver included within the high-grade goethite, there is one vug in particular that hosts a rich showing of some of the most unique silver crytals I have seen in some time!!! These silver crystals at first appear to be very fine wires - however upon close inspection one fines that they are extremely fine, ribbon-like crystals!!! In some cases these thin crystals are still pin straight (although they bend quite readily of course)!!! Although they are quite unique, they are absolutely native silver crystals!!! There is no doubt that this specimen could be easily trimmed to reveal more native silver throughout the goethite matrix if so desired as well!!! This is a very unique old time Leadville silver indeed!!! The pics hardly do it justice!!! Must be seen in person to be fully appreciated!!!
