Description/Interesting Notes:
A truly incredible example of native (technically extraterrestrial) iron var. kamacite from China!!! This specimen is incredible for numerous reasons - however the most striking
feature is that it is a CRYSTAL!!! While the overwhelming majority of meteorites exhibit rounded forms, this specimen represents a very rare occurence where a meteorite
exploded in just the right way where it was literally ripped apart along its Widmanstattan lines!!! Additionally, the
Nantan iron meteorites hold the distinction of being one of the very few meteor falls that were
actually witnessed!!! The fall was recorded in great detail among Chinese records -
"During summertime in May of Jiajing 11th year, stars
fell from the northwest direction, five to six fold long, waving like snakes and dragons. They were
bright as lightning and disappeared in seconds." Although the fall happened in 1516 A.D., the actual meteorites were not
found until 1958!!! The Nantan meteorites contain 92.35% iron and 6.96% nickel!!! Truly an amazing specimen all around!!!
