Cassiterite pseudomorph after Orthoclase

Wheal Coates, St Agnes, St Agnes District, Cornwall, England

3.25cm x 2.73cm x 2cm

Ex. Dr. C. O. Trechmann Collection (1851-1917)

Ex. British Museum

Description/Interesting Notes:

An absolutely magnificent, old time example of this highly prized pseudomorph from Cornwall!!! These old cassiterite after orthoclase pseudomorphs came from a small, one time find in Wheal Coates around 1828 and have been highly sought after by collectors ever since!!! These specimens are quite difficult to come by today and we have acquired every one we have ever come across!!! This specimen is among one of the best we've ever found!!! This killer specimen consists of group of sharply twinned orthoclase crystals that have been completely replaced by cassiterite!!! The crystals are complete, undamaged, and have particularly sharp faces and features!!! The specimen consists of two main crystals that intersect in aesthetic fashion - however upon closer inspection, one can see that there are actually several intergrown twinned crystals present!!! In person the sharpness and detail are much more significant then they appear in the pics!!! Upon close inspection one can see some eye-visible crystals of cassiterite embedded within the crystals' surface!!! There is a small amount of somewhat granular cassiterite matrix in association on the backside of one of the crystals as well (interestingly, this "matrix" material hosts some crystalline cassiterite material as well, however it has a distinctly different appearance than the pseudomorphic material when viewed under the scope)!!! As one would expect, this specimen has considerable heft for its size as well!!! This specimen is simply incredible in person - truly an extraordinary example of this prized "Holy Grail" pseudomorph!!! This specimen retains an old label from the mineral department at the British Museum with notation that it came from the Dr. C. O. Trechmann Collection (1851-1917)!!! Simply a magnificent example of this rare and highly sought after classic!!! The pics hardly do it justice!!! Must be seen in person to be fully appreciated!!!
